Dexter is a serial
killer, but it is ok, he only kills bad guys!
As part of the Miami
police department he masks his activities helping catch the more mundane
criminals, saving only the best (the baddest and nastiest) for his night time
activities, where he gives them their just deserts.
This latest escapade is probably Dexter’s worst
nightmare. A TV crew descends on his
department and wants to follow his every move.
This is not only bad for the department, as it generally gets in the way
of solving crime, but particularly bad for Dexter as it curtains his ability to
follow his own, very dark, hobby and the bad guys are getting away with it.
Written in the inimitable style which only Jeff Lindsay can
get away with, this is one of those times where you do find yourself siding
with a murderer. Whilst Dexter is a
serial killer, and really there is no excuse for it, the reader is drawn into
his world of justice and after a few chapters you can only feel that he does a
useful service for Miami
and you can’t help liking him, just a bit.
The characters are nicely rounded out – the clichéd one’s are
deliberately and wonderfully clichéd – and the whole book drags you along to a
shocking finale.
Funny, with sharp observations of human nature and inhuman
nature, this book is a strong addition to the Dexter series. Let’s hope that it is not the Final Cut and
we will see another slice of justice being meted out by Dexter in the near
future.
