When a young woman, Charlotte Tate, is found murdered in a park in Houston, Texas, Detective Robyn Tate is among the police officers called to the crime scene. She is, along with her colleague, Max Riley, assigned to the case. But Riley has her own problems: in her forties, never a beauty, divorced with several unsuccessful relationships, she finds satisfaction only by accessing on-line pornography on her computer. But someone has accessed her computer and has recorded both her and what she has been watching. That someone calls himself The Slavemaster; he contacts her and threatens that, unless she pays him $10,000 dollars, he will expose her via the Net not only to her family and colleagues but worldwide; this would not only devastate her family but ruin her career.

Then it transpires that Charlotte was not the loving and faithful wife that her distraught husband asserts she was but frequently visited on-line sex sites for the purpose of making assignations with strangers for casual sex. Not only that but Charlotte also had fallen prey to the Slavemaster. And one of Charlotte's sex partners was psychotherapist Jonas Farrell whom Robyn had been consulting in an effort to sort herself out. Robyn is desperate not to let the police enquiries reveal her own addiction to on-line porn, but how can she achieve this? And should she, if it means letting a blackmailer and a murderer escape justice?
