This is the second book in the series featuring Shrap, an army veteran who had served with Royal Engineers before moving to the Royal Military Police.  Her experiences when she was captured by the Taliban took a huge toll on her and she was later diagnosed with PTSD, and her career was over. When we first met her, she was homeless and living on the streets, among drug addicts and drunks, but this second book opens with her now living in a hostel run by Alicia Douglas. Although still haunted by her past, she has enrolled in a therapy programme that has silenced the screams in her head.

While standing outside in the small patch of the hostel garden she sees teenager Jadon scurrying over the wall. He is quivering with fear. ‘He saw us’, he said; me and Malik. He threw a body into the river; we could see a foot dangling. When the next day there is no sign of Malik. Shrap contacts DC Trevelyan, who has helped her in a previous investigation. He is pleased that she has enrolled in the programme. He doesn’t push any further, that is what she likes about him.  She explains what Jadon had told, who is the kid he says, Alicia’s son she replies, and Malik is his friend, who I am certain is in danger.

With DCI Burrows agreement Trevelyan and Devi Patel go down to St Saviour’s Dock. Although the river is murky Trevelyan spots an adult foot and the MUP secure the body and escort it to the mortuary,

When the dead body turns out to be someone Shrap knew, she decides to dig further and uncovers a web of suspects and secrets and a disturbing connection to a former soldier she knew.

The story moves at a cracking pace, as Shrap and  DC Trevelyan race against time in the hope of finding the missing teenage  boy Malik.

The characterisation is excellent. I particularly like Shrap, and in this book we learn how she got her name.  A thrilling mystery with a twist and a huge surprise.  Highly recommended.

Cal quickly becomes invested in this decade's old mystery, who is ‘Hillside Jane’? And what happened to her? 

Unknown is the 4^th instalment in the Cal Lovett series; it’s a compelling and satisfying mystery that’s set in the rugged and atmospheric Scottish Highlands. The two mysteries are masterfully interwoven and wholly compelling, leaving you no option but to continue reading. It’s a perfect blend of differing timelines, podcast extracts, amateur sleuthing and police procedural, with likeable and relatable characters.

As events start to unfold all is not what it seems, there is so much more to this seemingly tragic accident, and the answers lie in a complex web of betrayal and deceit, that will ultimately mess with your emotions for what could have been.  I highly recommend Unknown, it was excellent, and I also eagerly await Unseen, the recently announced 5^th instalment.

The words are spoken by young Irish jockey, Imogen Duffy to her abusive ex-boyfriend Liam who refuses to accept that their relationship is over.

About to ride City Flyer in the Queen Mother Champion Chase, but delayed by Liam, Imogen is not in the good books of the trainer Paddy Murphy, who is beginning to doubt his offer of the ride to Imogen following his first choice of jockey withdrawing after a bad fall the previous day. The horse’s owner is also sceptical of the slip of a girl who is about to ride his horse.  Despite the situation with Liam, Imogen suddenly felt happy astride a fast-moving muscular Thoroughbred, and they crossed the finish line half a length ahead. Leaving for the presentations Imogen came face to face with Liam and she reiterated that it was over between them. ‘You’ll regret it’ he said, ‘I’ll make sure of that’.

A surprise telephone call from trainer Freddie Swinton who runs a large outfit in Lambourne offering her a job is a life saver and so Imogen moves to England away from Liam.  All goes well. Imogen settles into nice cottage and is winning races much to the delight of Freddie Swinton.  Then abusive Liam moves to England and claims that he'd rather kill her than allow her to leave him. By now Imogen is doing well in her racing career, and through her winning successes she is becoming well-known to the public, and so Liam starts a campaign to ruin her life by telling salacious stories about her to the newspapers. With the stories now linking her name with Freddie Swinton, who is none too pleased, Imogen decides to take a break and return to her parents in Ireland to get away from Liam. But will he follow her?

This is a terrific book. I could not put it down, so fascinating is the turn that the book takes.  A jaw-dropping, cleverly plotted, brilliant gripping and totally unexpected twist. Most highly recommended.

‘The Bloomsbury Murder’ by Mike Hollow

Crime is like taxes and the poor – always with us. Even when wars are at their most fierce, ordinary people are robbed, cheated and murdered. In 1941, when the Blitz was causing mayhem and sleepless nights, there was plenty of work for ordinary policemen like Detective Inspector John Jago of the Metropolitan Police.

The Bloomsbury Murder he is called to the scene of an apparently senseless killing in London’s bohemian quarter. The victim, Mrs Rosemary Webster, is guilty of nothing more than a generous spirit; she has allowed her home to be taken over to house refugees and people made homeless by the Luftwaffe’s bombs. Why anyone would want to kill such a kind and considerate person is a complete mystery to DI Jago and his earnest young protegé DC Cradock. 

The doughty pair traverse London in order to interview her relations, friends and recipients of Mrs Webster’s goodwill, and slowly a picture emerges of her life, and eventually of her death. Their enquiries take them not only to Bloomsbury itself but also to a well-known publishing house, the much-damaged premises of University College London, an ambulance station and an air base on the outskirts of London – and also to the White Elephant, wartime home of the Ministry of Information, and nicknamed partly for its size and appearance and partly as an indication of many people’s opinion of the work done there. All the locations come vividly to life, described in the kind of detail that speaks of meticulous research.

The enquiries reveal that though Rosemary Webster was well liked by most, even adored by some, she was less popular with a few. Her biggest fans are mainly people she has helped: Charles Buckleby, a shabby, nervy failed businessman; well-meaning Mrs McCready, her housekeeper; unassuming German refugee Nadelmann. There’s also Godfrey Masterson, a professor at UCL, who is engaged in good works: proud and a little pompous, but with an unexpected softer side. On the other hand, to her abrasive foster brother, a bigwig at the Ministry of Information, and his wife, Mrs Webster’s progressive views and liberal outlook are less acceptable.

Drugs, stolen paintings and student high jinks are all woven into the plot, which unfolds at a leisurely pace reminiscent of 1940s black-and-white films, and the deliberately dated dialogue is clearly intended to convey the spirit of the times: all no doubt researched with as much care and attention to detail as the background. The result is a richly and carefully crafted snapshot of a police investigation in wartime London, as much historical novel as murder mystery.
