When a woman is found bludgeoned to death, DI Andrew Hicks suspects her ex-husband. There was reason, and a high percentage of murders are committed by someone close to the victim. Then a letter arrives at the station, addressed to DI Andrew Hicks. It is from the killer, who is telling Hicks it will happen again and he won’t be caught although he will enjoy the game of cat and mouse between himself and the murder team.

And he is right, another victim, a homeless man, is murdered, seemingly, as predicted, at random, and in the same violent way, as the woman, which no one, apart from the killer and the police could know the details of. The police are foxed. More letters arrive, and the murder count starts to mount. There is a random serial killer out there who will strike again at any moment.

DI Andrew Hicks now has to confront his own past if he is to find any answers. That is a very, very dark place to go back to, but a lot is at stake.

This is the first Mosby book I have read, and I read it in one evening. I enjoyed the fact that he writes in first person. I know very few crime novelists who do. I felt it took me closer to knowing DI Andrew Hicks, and pulled me, quickly, into this very dark story. It comes highly recommended.
